City to Begin Flushing Hydrants

The City of Coffeyville will begin flushing the water distribution lines on Friday. This is an annual project, which helps to maintain the water system as well as the quality of water delivered to customers.

The addition of ammonia to the water will be temporarily stopped which allows the chlorine to more effectively disinfect the lines. Fire hydrants will be opened in various locations throughout the city to flush the lines.

When ammonia is removed, there may be a stronger chlorine odor as well as a sulfur odor. Flushing the lines can affect the taste and appearance of water; however, it will continue to meet all KDHE requirements and will be safe to use and drink.

Customers may also notice low water pressure in areas where a hydrant is being flushed, slightly murky or discolored water and poor taste and/or odor. This could last up to one week. The entire project is expected to take about four weeks.
