In addition to providing fire protection, the 19-member Fire Department is also involved with fire prevention awareness, fire suppression and high angle, confined space and water rescue operations. Coffeyville is the State of Kansas HazMat Response Team #13 for southeast Kansas, and 13 members of the Fire Department are trained HazMat Technicians. The Fire Department assists the City with fire and building code enforcement and provides inspections for business occupancies, cereal malt beverage licenses, day care centers, home day cares, schools, medical facilities, nursing homes and restaurants. The Coffeyville Fire Department responds to every injury motor vehicle accident within the city limits. The department also responds outside the City if requested by our EMS or Sheriff's Department to other rural fire departments, communities and also into Oklahoma. The department also serves as severe weather monitors for the community. Firefighters take pride in their community and in helping the citizens. Upon request, they install smoke detectors with the assistance of various grants from the State of Kansas. Throughout the year they provide assistance for the community's special events including Inter-State Fair & Rodeo, Dalton Defenders Days, Relay For Life and others. They also conduct on-site training for residents on various topics including fire extinguisher use, fire safety and home safety. Each October, they visit the area schools during Fire Prevention Week. There are currently 9 EMT's on staff; in 2009, the Coffeyville FD made 630 response runs.
